About the Stadio Olimpico

The Stadio Olimpico is in the Foro Italico district in northern Rome, first built in 1928 and substantially rebuilt for the 1990 World Cup. It seats around 72,700 in its rugby configuration and is shared between AS Roma, Lazio and the Italian national rugby team, rugby is very much the guest here rather than the primary tenant. The ground is fully open-air, with no roof over any section, and a running track still circles the pitch, a legacy of its Olympic history that sets every seat back a little further than in a purpose-built rugby ground. It's an older, more traditional stadium than the modern venues in the Six Nations, which gives it a different character.

Where to sit

The two long sides are Tribuna Monte Mario, on the west, generally rated the best view in the house, and Tribuna Tevere on the east, a strong value alternative. Curva Nord and Curva Sud sit behind the two try-lines, the most affordable seats and the loudest sections. The four corner Distinti sections split the difference between view and atmosphere. Seating isn't segregated by team, mixing with home and away fans in the same stand is normal.

Getting there from central Rome: Metro Line A to Ottaviano, then Bus 32 to the stop opposite the Foro Italico, or Metro Line A to Flaminio, then Tram 2 to Piazza Mancini and a short walk across the Ponte Duca d'Aosta bridge. Either route takes 30 to 45 minutes from the centre, longer on matchday. Taxis are reliable but pricier on match days, and driving isn't recommended, parking nearby is limited.
